Éxito! is directed by the Institute for Health Promotion Research (IHPR) at UT Health San Antonio, which also directs national networks on Latino cancer and Latino childhood obesity and generates a social media campaign called SaludToday.

The program is funded by the National Cancer Institute with support from the Cancer Therapy & Research Center at UT Health San Antonio, Redes En Acción: The National Latino Cancer Research Network, and the University of California, San Francisco Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Dr. Ramirez, an internationally recognized cancer health disparities researcher, has spent 30 years directing research on human and organizational communication to reduce chronic disease and cancer health disparities affecting Latinos, including cancer risk factors, clinical trial recruitment, tobacco prevention, obesity prevention, healthy lifestyles, and more. She also trains/mentors Latinos in behavioral sciences and is on the board of directors for LIVESTRONG, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, and others. She is a member of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academies.

Daniel Hughes, PhD

Dr. Hughes is a doctorally trained Ph.D. in Kinesiology with a sport and exercise psychology specialty. He is an American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist and American Heart Association ACLS certified. His research focus is on bio-behavioral holistic interventions for cancer prevention and control with an emphasis on culturally adapting and motivationally tailoring health promotion interventions targeting ethnic/racial cancer populations.

Cantu Pawlik is project coordinator for the IHPR’s Éxito! Latino Cancer Research Leadership Training program, which offers an annual summer institute and annual internship opportunities to increase the number of Latinos who pursue doctoral degrees and cancer research.
